Breonna Taylor Verdict

Mistrial Declared in Civil Rights Case of Former Police Officer Brett Hankison

Former Detective Accused of Wrongful Death in Breonna Taylor Case

Federal Grand Jury Returns Indictments

A federal grand jury in Louisville, Kentucky, returned two indictments against former police officer Brett Hankison on Thursday, unsealing them the same day. The indictments include charges of federal civil rights violations and unlawful conspiracy.

The charges stem from the March 13, 2020, death of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman who was shot and killed by police officers executing a no-knock search warrant at her apartment. Hankison was one of the officers involved in the raid, and he fired 10 shots through Taylor's window.

The federal trial began on February 23, and jurors were tasked with determining whether Hankison willfully deprived Taylor of her civil rights, specifically her right to be free from excessive force. After approximately three hours of deliberation, the jury announced that they could not reach a unanimous verdict.

As a result, U.S. District Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings declared a mistrial. The case will likely be retried at a later date.
